Social Studies

"History is a guide to navigation in perilous times.
History is who we are and why we are the way we are."
                                        ....David C. McCullough

Social Studies can be defined as "the integrated study of the social sciences to promote civic competence." Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon multiple disciplines.

Our Social Studies curriculum establishes a framework consisting of major themes which we believe all effective social studies programs should include:

 civic ideals and practices
 people, places, and environments
 individuals, groups, and institutions
 production, distribution, and consumption
 culture and international connections
 authority, and governance
 science, technology, and society

About Our History...

Edmond Public Schools District opened in the fall of 1889, following the Land Run for the Unassigned Lands, April 22nd of the same year.  Our first schoolhouse was also the first public school opened in Oklahoma Territory.  It was constructed with funds raised by the Edmond Ladies Auxillary, under the leadership of the city's first librarian, Mrs. Jenny Forster, utilizing voluntary labor from our community. The original schoolhouse became the Sander family camera shop by the middle of the 20th century, until it was restored by funding from the Edmond Preservation Trust and reopened to the community for our statehood centennial. The original schoolhouse now stands at the corner of 2nd street and Boulevard.
