We will apply the Life Principles each day.

As members of West Field, we value and respect others.

We will make today what we wish it to be, it is our choice!

School Song:

Adopted from High School Musical Cast, "We're All In This Together"
"We're All in This Together" is the closing number for the movie. The dance number features the cast of High School Musical and conveys the theme of unity over divisive typecasting.  It is often compared to the closing song of Grease."

We selected this song for several reasons: first, our school's mission statement is reflected in the theme of the song; second,
our mascot is also the Wildcats-- like the chant at the end of the song; and finally because it is just a FUN song...
the West Field kids already know this song and love to sing it each week in Round Up!

Together, together, together everyone
Together, together, come on lets have some fun
Together, were there for each other every time
Together together come on lets do this right

Here and now its time for celebration
I finally figured it out (yeah yeah)
That all our dreams have no limitations
That's what its all about

Everyone is special in their own way
We make each other strong (each other strong)
We're not the same
We're different in a good way
Together's where we belong

We're all in this together
Once we know that we are
We're all stars and we see that
We're all in this together
And it shows when we stand hand in hand
Make our dreams come true

Together, together, together everyone
Together, together, come on lets have some fun
Together, were there for each other every time
Together together come on lets do this right

We're all here and speaking out with one voice
We're going to rock the house (rock the house)
The party's on now everybody make some noise
come on scream and shout

We've arrived because we stuck together
Champions one and all

We're all in this together
Once we know that we are
We're all stars and we see that
We're all in this together
And it shows when we stand hand in hand
Make our dreams come true

We're all in this together
When we reach we can fly
Know inside we can make it
We're all in this together
Once we see there's a chance
That we have and we take it

Wildcats sing along
Yeah, you really got it goin' on
Wildcats in the house
Everybody say it now
Wildcats everywhere
Wave your hands up in the air
That's the way we do it
Lets get to it
Time to show the world

We're all in this together
Once we know
That we are
We're all stars
And we see that
We're all in this together
And it shows
When we stand
Hand in hand
Make our dreams come

We're all in this together
Once we know that we are
We're all stars and we see that
We're all in this together
And it shows when we stand hand in hand
Make our dreams come true

Wild cats everywhere
Wave your hands up in the air
That's the way we do it
Let's get to it
Come on everyone!

School Rules:

bullet

Do your best everyday.

bullet

Do the right thing.

bullet

Treat others the way you want to be treated.

School HoursOur first bell is rung at 8:30AM; school begins at 8:35AM and is dismissed at 3:05PM.  Morning Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten is 8:35 – 11:05AM.  Afternoon Pre-K and Kindergarten is from 12:35 – 3:05PM.  A child not in his/her homeroom after 8:35AM is considered tardy.  According to district policy, three times of being tardy becomes one day of absence.

Parent Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures:  Parents who wish to drop off or pick up their children must enter and exit campus using the main entrance located on Pennsylvania Avenue.  After entering campus, cars should make am immediate right turn at the very first traffic lane (not the parking lot) and pull completely forward allowing other cars to line up behind them. Please do not block traffic or double park your car.  Students will be unloaded or loaded three or four at a time at the front entrance plaza under the supervision of a duty teacher.  Parents and guests must follow the requests and directions of the duty teachers; this models good citizenship and respect for our staff. All other traffic lanes, entrances, and exits (fire lanes) are expressly reserved for district transportation, mini-busses, and commercial daycare vans.

Absent Students It is very important that each child is here each day unless s/he is sick. Parents or guardians should contact the school secretary before 10:00 AM on days which students must be absent.  The office will contact parents of unaccounted students.  Parents must also contact daycare providers if their child will not be in school, as the daycare vans will not leave the premises until all students are accounted.

TelephonesA telephone in the office is available to students for emergency use only.  Arrangements for after-school social events, etc. should be pre-arranged.

Bicycles/Scooters:   Due to the very busy streets near our school, students are not permitted to ride bicycles or scooters to school.

MoneyStudents should not bring money to school unless it is for lunches or a specific school sponsored activity.  When ordering book club items, the school can only accept checks made payable to the book club.

Emergency InformationIt is important for parents to notify the office any time there is a change of address or a new phone numbers for home or office.  This is necessary in keeping enrollment data updated in the event of an illness or injury.  It is very important that emergency numbers be provided.

Identify: Please mark lunch containers, backpacks and clothing with the name of the owner.  Items collected in “lost and found” which go unclaimed will be given to a local charity at the end of each semester.

ShoesChildren are expected to wear appropriate shoes for physical education classes. For safety concerns, children are not allowed to wear flip-flops at West Field.  Shoes with “wheels” are not permitted, either.

Pets: Please arrange with your child’s teacher a specific time to bringing a pet to school for show and tell.  Please be aware and respect that some children are allergic to animals.

InsuranceThe Edmond School District makes accident insurance available to students.  The school system is not financially responsible for the cost of accidental injury occurring from a school activity.  This insurance is offered as convenience. Forms are sent home at the beginning of each school year and are available in the office.

Toys/Nuisance Items Students shall not bring toys, gadgets, electronic games, or anything to school that would cause a disruption of the instructional process.  Teachers will confiscate items and parents may reclaim them in the Principal’s Office.  No toy/water or play guns or play knives are EVER allowed at school!  (See also Dangerous Weapons policy.)

Birthdays: If you are planning a private birthday party, please distribute invitations in another way besides the classroom. If you’re not inviting the entire class, passing out invitations in school can hurt many children’s feelings.  You may wish to purchase a directory for published personal information. Birthday parties are not held at school-- including no cupcakes, cakes, or party favors. Recognition of birthdays is up to the teacher’s discretion in each classroom.  Floral or balloon bouquets should not be delivered to school for students.

Field Trips & Special Events: Each grade level plans various special events/activities as well as a field trip during the school year. Prior to an event students are expected to maintain good behavior and work habits so that they will not be excluded from these extra privileges. Parents will be notified if they are needed to supervise their child at a special event or on a field trip.  Teachers will communicate with parents about any loss of privileges prior to the event.

Bullying vs. Tattling

 What is bullying?

Bullying happens whenever someone uses his or her power unfairly and repeatedly to hurt someone.

 Different kinds of bullying include:

bulletHurting someone’s body or things (hitting, tripping, flicking, thumping)
bulletHurting someone’s feelings (name calling, ignoring, sarcasm, leaving someone out)
bulletHurting someone’s friendship (telling lies, ruining a reputation)

How to respond to a bully:

Look the bully in the eye, respond immediately and assertively say:

1.      " I don’t like what you said (what you did)."

2.     "If you do not stop, it is my responsibility to report you."

3.           Report it to the closest adult.

If you or someone you know is being bullied, GET HELP!

Telling vs. Tattling-- there is a difference between telling and tattling!

bulletTelling is reporting if someone is doing something harmful or on purpose.  Telling is when you or someone else needs help, or when you are scared.
bulletTattling is trying to get someone else in trouble, or trying to get attention for yourself.
bulletIt’s okay to TELL an adult!

Five things bystanders can do to stop bullying:

If you are a bystander, child or adult, you too can help stop bullying! If you stand by and watch bullying, you are creating an audience for the bully.  Do not watch, cheer, or laugh at what a bully does to another person!

  1. Don’t laugh.
  2. Turn.
  3. Walk away.
  4. Go to get help from an adult.
  5. Speak up when you can safely do so.

What happens to a bully?

Oklahoma school law mandates that the school climate shall be conducive to learning and to have procedures to address disruptive student behavior.  The school has developed a school wide Code of Conduct with an outline of sequential consequences for disruptive behavior.  The school will impose consequences for bullying consistent with our plan.  If the bullying persists, parents will be asked to become involved and the consequences will become increasingly severe.

Special Programs & Services

Individuals with disabilities needing any assistance to participate in school-sponsored functions should contact the school office at least 48 hours prior to the event.  Please indicate the specific accommodation(s) or service(s) needed to participate effectively in the school activity.  Our district is committed to provide accommodations and/or services to parents and community members with disabilities in order to participate in school sponsored programs.

Tests Provided by Edmond Public Schools

OKLAHOMA CORE CURRICULUM TEST  (OCCT)

The state-mandated criterion-referenced tests (Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests) assess students' mastery of the Priority Academic Studies Skills (PASS) for all students in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.  The writing assessment is given during February for grades 5 and 8.  The remaining subject tests are given during April.

The criterion-referenced OCCT are directly tied to the Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS), Oklahoma’s legislatively mandated core curriculum.  The tests measure student performance relative to the specific content and skills of the PASS.  The results of the OCCT reflect the degree to which students have mastered the PASS standards.  For further information check www.edmondschools.net or  www.sde.state.ok.us.

NAEP

The National Assessment of Educational Progress is authorized by Congress and funded by the federal government; it is the nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do.  NAEP has been charged with collecting and reporting information on student achievement in mathematics, reading, science, U.S. history, writing, and other subjects.  Since it is a sampling process conducted nationally, not all 4th or 8th grade students will be tested.

PROFICIENCY-BASED PROMOTION

Proficiency-Based Promotion awards credit for students' knowledge in the core curriculum areas.  The exams consist of a combination of the following: multiple choice, short answer, essay questions and science laboratory activities.  These tests are offered twice per year, and students must achieve a 90% or above to receive credit.  The permanent record will reflect credit-by-exam but no letter grade is given.  Proficiency tests are available for students who have not been enrolled in the course. Applications for proficiency testing are available at the Curriculum Office, located at the northeast corner of the Administrative Center.

HOME SCHOOL/NON-ACCREDITED PLACEMENT

Placement tests are administered to students who wish to enroll in Edmond Schools and have been home schooled or have attended non-accredited schools

QUALIFYING TESTS FOR ELEMENTARY GIFTED/TALENTED PROGRAM

a)  A cognitive abilities test is administered in the spring to all second grade students.  A total score on this test that is at or above the 97th percentile qualifies a student for the gifted/talented program.

b)  A cognitive abilities test is administered in the fall to all 4th and 6th grade students.  A total score on the test that is at or above the 97th percentile qualifies a student for the gifted/talented program.

Safety & Security

Safe School Policy:  All school doors are to remain locked during the school day with the exception of the main entrance.  Foyer security doors will be locked during school hours. Therefore, visitors are required to identify themselves with a secretary in the main office and wear a visitor badge while at West Field.  You may read a more detailed policy located in this handbook for further information.

Valuable tips for visiting in our school:

·        If you plan to volunteer or visit a classroom (with prearrangements made with the teacher) you may obtain a visitor’s badge after signing in at the main office.

·        Frequent interruptions of parents coming to classroom doors to deliver or pick up items create distractions and interrupt the learning process.  Therefore, the secretaries have been instructed to call students out of class at a convenient time and have them come to the office-- rather than sending parents into the classrooms.

·        When parents bring students to school late and escort them to class (or wait outside classroom doors and/or in the halls at the end of the day), it interrupts the learning environment.

·        At the end of the day, our procedure is for all teachers to escort their classes to the bus lines and/or exits.

·        Guests are welcome to visit in the front entrance and not go to classrooms unless they have a pre-arranged meeting with a teacher.

Teachers and staff will stop any visitor on campus that is not wearing a visitor’s badge.  This protects your child, other’s children, and our staff from intruders.  If you are stopped and questioned, please do not take this personally; it is for everyone’s safety!

State Laws

In accordance with Oklahoma State Law, Chapter 12, Article III, Section 1039: The chief administrative officer (the principal or anyone designated by him to maintain order) has the authority and power to direct any person to leave an institution of learning who is not a student, officer, or employee thereof and who:

1.      Interferes with the peaceful conduct of activities at an institution of learning: or

2.      Commits an act which interferes with the peaceful conduct of activities at an institution of learning: or

3.      Enters the institution of learning for the purpose of committing an act, which may interfere with the peaceful conduct of activities at an institution of learning.

In addition, any person to whom this applies who fails to leave the school as directed or returns without first obtaining written permission from the administrator, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

Library Media Center

The West Field Media Center is a warm, inviting place that brings children and learning together.  It provides a place for discovery and an environment where students can be information seekers through both independent and group activities. Our fully automated media center houses a collection of literature, audiovisual materials, periodicals, and equipment designed to support the curriculum as well as provide for research and recreational reading.

Checking Out Books:   Teachers may come with their classes to the Media Center each week to check out books.  Students may check out as many books as they can read in a day.  They will not be allowed to check out additional books until all checked out books are returned.  Teachers or Library Media Specialist may impose a limit on how many books an individual student can check out if he/she cannot be responsible with the unlimited number.

Overdue Books: Books are checked out for a two-week period.  Reminder notices will be sent home for overdue books.  Overdue books will not be charged a fine, but students may lose the privilege of checking out additional books until the matter is cleared.

Lost/Stolen/Damaged Books: The school will not be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged books.  Students

and/or parents will be asked to return or pay for replacement of lost, stolen, or damaged items.

Parent Volunteers: Our Media Center volunteers are a vital part of our Media Center program.  The time they give to checking out books in and out, re-shelving returned books, and helping with the processing of materials, frees the media specialist to spend more time with the students.  Please contact the Media Center for information about volunteering!

Accelerated Reader The Media Center is the hub for our implementation of Reading Renaissance at West Field School.  Initially, students will be assessed using STAR reading software.  Based on the results, a reading goal within in their reading zone will be set for each student.  Students who are determined to be independent readers will then choose books from his/her individualized reading zone and quiz on them using Accelerated Reader software.  Special events and/or rewards are planned for students who meet their individual goal during each goal period.  Our annual school theme is a school wide project we use to keep students motivated and reading.  We develop a different theme each year to place lots of fun into practicing reading.  Students can also check out books from the Edmond Public Library and then quiz on them at school, provided that the quiz is available.
