Edmond High School Symbol from the past

1976

Central Middle School was originally built as a high school.  In 1956, Phase I of a new high school building was constructed to accommodate increased enrollment.  This was done amid much controversy due to the “out in the country” location of the school.  Phase II was completed in 1959 and Phase III in 1968 with this construction nearly finishing the new high school.  However, by 1968 the high school population was bursting at the seams requiring eleventh and twelfth grade students to be transferred to another site.  Left with ninth and tenth grade students, Central became the first Mid-High in the district.  Between 1974 and 1977, both a cafeteria and Vocational-Agriculture facility were added to the building.

Finally, in 1983 Phase IV completed Central Mid-High.  As a result of continued student growth the next ten years brought numerous changes to configuration of grades nine-twelve.  By 1993 Edmond Public Schools had moved to three high schools(9-12).  In desperate need of a fourth middle school, Central Middle School opened its doors serving sixth, seventh, and ninth graders its first year and at the same time, began much needed renovations.  We became a true middle school beginning in 1994 serving sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who presently feed into 3 high schools.  Renovations continued through 1995 and 1996, Central began the process of remodeling.  Forty thousand square feet were added including a new cafeteria, performing arts facility and classrooms.  All construction and remodeling were completed in 1999.  Central Middle School is a nostalgic and classic facility with modern additions.  This building was originally built as a high school, so we are afforded a facility that has many state of the art extras (full gym, concessions, locker rooms, outdoor amphitheatre/courtyard/classroom, performing arts wing, technology education and home arts learning centers).

Central Middle School became a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence on May 24, 2002.

Capitol Building of Washington D.C.

An enormous amount of work went into accomplishing this goal.  It started over two years ago when the Blue Ribbon Committee began its' work.  After an intense application process and a site visit, Central Middle School found itself the receiver of the award.  Of all the schools in Oklahoma, only two were selected; Edmond Memorial High School, and Central.  Central's Blue Ribbon team went to Washington D.C. in October.  The team was made up of: Tara Fair, Teresa Kastl, Mark Kirk, and Diane Gothard.
