Teacher Spotlight Title

Teacher of the Year 2006-2007

SUSAN SAWYER

My first memories of school are about going to the little private kindergarten in my neighborhood. If you think that I am going to say I adored it, you are quite mistaken. While my teacher was leading us through the fire escape plan, I was planning my real escape. One day I did escape and ran a whole block home only to meet the wrath of my mother. I never tried a daring escape again.

First grade was not much better. I cried every day for many days until one life-altering day when the teacher called me out into the hall. When I faced the double doors at the end of the hall, I saw my dad coming toward me and knew that I had to change my juvenile first-grade ways.

Quite a change occurred in the following years. I fell in love with the learning process and now I elect to go to school every day. No escape plan is needed! Not only that, but I also teach piano after school, which means that I spend additional hours each week teaching. This is my fourteenth year teaching in the public schools and my thirtieth year teaching piano.

My humble beginnings were in the tiny town of Ft. Cobb, where I graduated as valedictorian of my class of approximately 25 students. From there I went on to college and completed a BS and a master’s in education, as well as a BA in piano performance. These degrees were accomplished through coursework at Cameron University, Oklahoma State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and Oklahoma University.

I have two amazing sons and two precious daughters-in-law. Matt is a software developer and musician in Tulsa. His wife, Amy, is a student and musician. Joshua is a mechanical engineer in Stillwater. His wife, Michelle, (a former piano student of mine), is also a student. All four continue to inspire and encourage me.
