Group 1: Beliefs

*taken from The Cheyenne, by Raymond Bial
The Cheyenne, like most Native Americans, were very spiritual. Great spirits lived in the sky, beneath the ground, and at each of the four directions. Powerful spirits also lived in springs and streams, as well as hills and bluffs. The Cheyenne believed in monsters that lived underwater, and ghosts that occasionally frightened people.
The Cheyenne revered plants and animals. Many of their beliefs and rituals were centered on them. The most revered animal was the buffalo, the animal that provided for so many of their needs. They prayed to the buffalo spirits and to the buffalo skull for the return of the herd.
Considered the voice of the Great Spirit, the drum figured prominently in ceremonies. Its round shape symbolized the universe, and its steady beat represented the pulsing heart.
