Group 3: Life on the Plains

The recorded history of the Cheyenne begins in 1680 in Minnesota.  At that time, a French explorer, Sieur de La Salle, was visited by members of a tribe he called the Chaa, later called the Cheyenne by the French.  They had been living for a long time in villages in the wooded valleys of the Mississippi River and along the shores of nearby lakes.  They ate the wild rice that grew in abundance along the shores of the lakes and the men caught fish and turtles, and hunted deer, rabbits, and other small animals.  Toward the end of the 17th century, the Cheyenne began to leave the upper Midwest because of conflict with other Native tribes who were being pushed from their lands by the French and British settlers.  They settled in North Dakota and prospered until around 1750, when they began to trade for horses, brought to North America by the Spaniards.  By the late 1700s, they were being pushed again from their lands.  They began their lives as plains Indians, no longer living in permanent villages, but moving their camps several times each year.

Gather your facts from this book.   Decide what the most important facts are, and write them on your storyboard.  Use the Glossary  to look up any unfamiliar words.  Your classroom teacher must approve your storyboard before you proceed to the next step. Once you have your terms and your text written in your storyboard, you can find your pictures from below:

American Memory Photo Collection

Type your term in the search box (If you use Cheyenne Indians as your terms you will get lots of pictures and you can scroll through.  Or you can type a specific term in (like "travois") and see what you get.  Go to Gallery View, then keep clicking on the picture until you get the largest view.  Then you can save it to your home directory.
