 Practice Guidelines

♪ A metal folding stand is necessary for practice at home because it promotes good, upright posture since the music can be placed at eye level.  Never practice on a bed or couch, as it is impossible to sit up straight and see the music.

♪ Using a full-length mirror will give students a vantage point that allows them to model and monitor their own posture and position individually.

♪ Consistent practice at least 20 minutes a day is necessary for noticeable improvement.  It is good to practice at the same time every day, perhaps before school or right when you arrive home from school, for example.

♪ Practice slowly!!!

♪ Play for your parents as often as possible.  Parents, encourage your child to perform for you often.

♪ Pick a quiet place to practice, free from distractions.

♪ Practice the most difficult material first when your mind is at its peak, and be sure to practice what is asked of you.

♪ Seriously consider private lessons if you are not currently taking them.

 Meet the director

Kristin Geist

This is my seventh year to work with Edmond Public Schools but my twelfth year teaching. In addition to directing the Cheyenne orchestras, I also direct the Edmond Festival Strings Orchestra which is part of the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras. I am a graduate of Oklahoma City University where I earned my bachelors degree in music education. I have worked with OKCPS at Classen SAS prior to graduating and began string programs at Nichols Hills and Sequoyah Elementary after graduation. I then moved to Dallas, Texas where I was the orchestra director at Barbara Bush M.S. in CFBISD for four years. My husband, Nick, and I reside in Oklahoma City with our children, Andrew and Eleanor.
