Helpful Kindergarten Tips

*Work with your child in small increments.  Working for more than 10-15 minutes at a time might frustrate your child.  Keep it fun.  Instead of worksheets, use games, write on glass patio doors, chalkboards, or shower walls, cut paper dolls, play with play dough, etc.

*Check the internet for new ideas.  All children are different and learn in different ways.  On the internet, you will find a myriad of ideas for helping your child.

*Turn off the TV!  Set a goal as a family to only watch TV so many hours a week.  This will ensure time spent together as a family.  Play a game together.  Get outside and write on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk!  Read a book together as a family!

*Invite your child’s friends over to play!  This will give you an opportunity to see how your child handles social situations.  One or two hours makes a good play date at this age.

Homework:

Please read with your child at least 10 minutes each night and record it on his/her reading log.  One log is due per month per district requirements.

Your child will be working on learning all 26 letters in upper and lower case.  He will be expected to recognize these letters in print, tell you the sound for each letter and be able to write each letter in correct D’Nealian Handwriting.

Fun ways to learn your letters or sight words:

*Make a double set of flashcards on 3 by 5 cards and play memory.

*Write the words or letters in shaving cream on the window, table or shower wall and say the word as you write it.

*Write the words or letters with your favorite flavor of pudding and your finger.

*Write the words or letters with sidewalk chalk outside.

*Spell the words with magnetic letters on the fridge.

*Find and circle the letters or words in a magazine or newspaper article.  You could even cut them out and glue them onto a piece of paper or make sentences with them!

DLTK.com has some fun ways to make Bingo cards.  Make up a set of sight word bingo cards and play bingo with your family!

Math:  We are learning to tell time to the hour, to identify coins and using a number line to count forward and backward!

Please work with your child 5-10 minutes per night on letter recognition, the sounds each letter makes and how to write each letter when you say the letter name.

Sight Words:  Kindergarten students should be able to say each word when they see it in print without having to sound it out.  These are the words we will learn this year along with other seasonal and theme-related words.

Great Websites:  Some of these websites have worksheets you can print off and some have wonderful games for your child to play to reinforce what we’ve learned at school!

This site has printable handwriting pages with lines for your child to use to write stories, practice writing numbers or letters, etc.   I prefer to use Style 1 of the Preschool format for practicing letters.
