What’s New

We are quickly marching toward the end of our school year!  Six weeks are left for us to complete our study of mysteries.

Our first grade class is off and running.  We will be learning about the four main types of thinking skills for the rest of the year, as well as doing lots of getting to know you activities.

Second graders will be ending the year with a mystery situation called “Who Stole Mr. Bear?”  Students will observe a “crime scene”, make observations, run tests on evidence, and draw conclusions.  We will be doing a little bit each week until we solve it.  They will also work on fact and opinion and logic skills.

Third graders are studying more famous places like Stonehenge and Atlantis.  They will also be solving a mystery over the next few weeks called “Nursery Rhyme Village”.  The crime is the theft of Little Bo Peep’s sheep!  In addition, we will practice logic skills and evaluating options when problem solving.

Fourth and fifth graders have worked so hard on the original mystery stories that we compiled into class books.  It was a lot of hard work, but it will be worth it!  Fourth graders will be ending the year with short individual projects on famous mysteries.

Fifth graders will be busy, busy over the next few weeks.  They have a program coming up, graduation, Junior Achievement visiting, and more.  Sharman Barghols, the Cimarron enrichment teacher, will be visiting on May 1st to answer students’ questions.  In between all of these activities, they will be doing short research projects as well.

What a great year this has been!

A Typical Class

We begin every class with a quote of the week.  Our quote always goes with our Chisholm Word of the Week, one of the Life Principles.  We have a “Mystery of the Day” that is some kind of riddle or problem to solve.  After that, we do a critical or creative thinking warm-up.  It might be a logic puzzle, strategy game, some other type of puzzle, or a creative activity.  We then work on activities related to our grade theme, go to the computer lab for research, or engage in hands-on activities such as science experiments.  We do another critical thinking, creative thinking, or problem solving activity, and usually end with the Mystery Object, a picture of an item from the past that the students try to guess by asking yes or no questions.
