What is a Parent Choice School?
-
No residential boundaries are
assigned to our school. Any family living in the Edmond Public School
District may submit an application for their children to attend Clegern.
We have a lottery every
February for open positions and maintain a wait list throughout the year.
I live outside of the Edmond School district, can my children attend Clegern?
- No, you must live within the Edmond Public School district.
What makes
Clegern different from other schools?
-
We provide a sound basic skills
program that is complimented by
Core Knowledge
as the common instructional sequence of concepts presented. A
variety of teaching approaches and methods (see
Schools Attuned, All Kinds of Minds as examples) allow us to serve the
different learning styles of students. Students at Clegern learn in an
environment that fosters cooperation, mutual respect, individual
responsibility, success and positive self-concept.
- Clegern is a small school with only two classes per grade. Class
size will never exceed the district limits.
What is Core Knowledge?
-
The Core Knowledge Sequence is a
detailed outline of specific content to be taught in science, math, history,
geography, language arts and fine arts. Murals painted outside of each
grade level show what subjects that grade covers. Visit the
Core Knowledge website for more
detailed information.
I live in the Clegern neighborhood, do I still have to go through the lottery?
- Yes. Only those who lived in the original Clegern
neighborhood before Clegern became a choice school (in August 1998)
have preference and do not have to lottery. Proof must be presented.
The original Clegern neighborhood is within the following borders: 2nd St.
on the north, 15th St. on the south, Broadway on the west, and Rankin on the
east.
How does the Lottery system
work?
- The lottery is a videotaped random drawing of applications that
takes place at the school board.
Each application is assigned a number as it is drawn. The lowest numbers
are assigned the available openings at Clegern. Remaining applications
are placed on a waiting list according to their assigned numbers, lowest
first.
Do
children of Edmond Public Schools employees get preference?
- No. As of the 03-04 school year only children of
Clegern teachers have preference, however there is currently only one
student attending Clegern who got in under this preference system.
I think people are getting preference who shouldn't be... can you prove they're
not?
- You are
welcome to view the videotape at school. There are many witnesses
who attend the lottery as well.
Can I
increase my chances if I get my application in early?
- No. No preference is given to the order applications are received.
When can I
fill out an application for the lottery?
- Applications are usually taken the last week of January and the first week
of February. Call in early January or check this website to be sure. 405-340-2955
I
missed the lottery, can I still get on the waiting list?
- Yes. Just come to the office and fill out the application.
What do I bring with me when I fill out a lottery application?
- Nothing. You'll just fill out a short application.
What happens if my child doesn't get placed?
- Your child will be placed on our waiting list. You will be notified
if your child's name comes up.
How long does my application stay on the wait list?
- Applications stay on the waiting list until the next year's lottery.
Does the waiting list carry over to the next school year?
- No. Serious consideration was given to that at one time, however it
was determined to be a logistical impossibility, and would penalize
families who are new to Edmond.
Once my child is in Clegern, do I have to reapply every year?
- No, they automatically have placement through 5th grade.
What if only one of my children gets accepted?
- Your other child's application will go to the front of the wait list for
their respective grade.

- No, younger siblings entering kindergarten have a place reserved.
My older children attended Clegern and their younger
sibling is ready to
start kindergarten. Will he/she still have preference even though his/her
siblings are no longer at Clegern?
- Yes. Let us know the January before your kindergartener is due to
start school, and we will be happy to reserve a place. Once the lottery
has taken place and the new families have been notified (March 1), we would
have to place your child at the front of the wait list.
