Mr. Rutherford's Physical Education Class

Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge

Physical fitness is an integral part of Physical Education.  The Presidential Physical Fitness battery of tests is the standard and the desired goal of the students of Ida Freeman.  The Presidential Physical Fitness test consists of five components.  the 1/4, 1/2 or mile run is to test cardio-pulmonary fitness.  The V-Sit Test is to test flexibility of the lower back and hamstrings.  The Curl-Up Test to test abdominal strength.  The Push-Up Test is to test abdominal strength.  The Shuttle Run is to test agility.  All test are standardized into two percentile criteria, above 50% and above 85%.  All standards are based on criteria for age, male and female.  If a child passes all five tests above the 50% criteria they earn the National Fitness Award.  If a child passes all five tests above the 85% criteria they earn the Presidential Fitness Award.

The students at Ida Freeman have excelled on the Presidential Physical Fitness test.  Since introducing the students to the test in 1991, over 3000 students have earned the Presidential Award and over 2000 students have the National Award.  We have had 160 students who have earned the Presidential Physical Fitness Award from 1st thru 5th grade. The students work all year long using a variety of practice techniques to progress.  Emphasizing technique and effort all the while striving to better their last results leads to success.  The students of Ida Freeman have been the Presidential Physical Fitness "State Champions" for the years 93-94, 94-95, 95-96, 96-97, 97-98, 98-99, 00-01, 01-02, 02-03 03-04, 04-05, 05-06, 06-07.  The desire, dedication, and work ethic needed to earn these awards will forever be a tool to success in all of life's endeavors.
