Edmond Public Schools recently adopted Everyday Mathematics as its new elementary mathematics textbook. The selection process was a year long study which required the committee to study research about current best practices in mathematics instruction and find the program which best met the rigorous criteria.
The Everyday Mathematics program was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project in order to enable children in elementary grades to learn more mathematical content and become life-long mathematical thinkers. Its instructional design was carefully crafted to capitalize on student interest and maximize student learning by developing concepts and skills over time and in a wide variety of contexts. Its core author team at the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project collaborated on all grade levels to provide a focused, coherent, well-articulated curriculum.
Ø In Everyday Mathematics, you can expect to see…..
Ø A problem-solving approach based on everyday situations;
Ø An instructional approach that revisits concepts regularly;
Ø Frequent practice of basic skills, often through games;
Ø Lessons based on activities and discussion, not a textbook;
Ø Mathematical content that goes beyond basic arithmetic.
