8th Grade Enrichment: EXPLORING ARCHITECTURE: Designing a Dream Home
Introduce Architecture. Discuss building design, styles, columns, and various elements of architecture. Alone: Brainstorm ideas for dream house. In groups: Discuss individual brainstorm lists and create group list for house design. Create rough draft and drawn final draft to scale. Design real estate flier to advertise house.
Week of September 6-10: We will research the history of architecture, historic structures, careers available in the architecture field, and further areas, using Sequoyah Media Center computers and references.
Week of September 13-17: Jay Yowell of jy architecture will speak to students one day this week.
Register for the October 23 ACT date, if possible. (Deadline is September 17.) If you do not have the information sheet, which provides FAQ answers, please ask for another one. Information is also available at www.act.org. For high school code, middle school students should use 800-000. If you scored well on the ACT last year and want this year's score sent to Duke University, use their code 3088 in the space for where you wish the score reported; if not, enter nothing in that area.

7th Grade Enrichment: Planning and Design: Create a hardscape and brochure for a recreational facility.
Drawing to proportion and working in a group, create both rough and final drafts of a recreational facility hardscape . Produce a brochure to advertise your facility.
Week of September 6-10: Research recreational facilities, the physics of roller coasters, construction costs and further areas, using Sequoyah Media Center Computers.
Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) notifications will be sent later this month to students who qualified (by test score) to take the ACT or SAT and have scores reported to Duke. This is an excellent program, and we will be discussing it in class. (If you missed qualifying by a point or two, you may still take the test by registering at www.act.org. The code for students who are not reporting scores to Duke is 800-000.)
