Band

The instrumental music program at Summit M.S. is exemplary and as a result the Santa Fe High School Band program is one of the best bands in the state and has been recognized internationally with the band's participation this year in London, England's New Years' Day Parade.  Locally, Summit M.S. has consistently performed at a superior level!  Summit M.S. 8th Grade Band and 7th Grade Band have both competed at large ensemble and solo/ensemble contests at a superior level each year.  Our staff is complemented by the addition of a staff member, Ms. Kevynn Sanford who helps us weekly.

The Program

 6th Grade - Beginning Band

Beginning band is available to students whose parents can provide a beginning band instrument. Beginning band instruments are flute, clarinet, cornet, trombone and orchestra bells. Due to media exposure, some instruments enjoy greater popularity and therefore, require a limited enrollment in order to maintain a uniform balance in ensemble instrumentation. Consequently, the number of students permitted to enroll in classes for flute and orchestra bells (drums) is based upon the student's score on the Selmer Music aptitude survey which is administered during the pre-enrollment process. Clarinet, cornet and trombone are considered the "backbone" of the band and are critical to a successful band program. Therefore, there are NO LIMITATIONS on the number of students who wish to participate. All beginning band classes meet daily during regular school hours. Students will be placed in classes according to the instrument which they play. Emphasis is placed on fundamental training with a performance in the fall and spring by the sixth grade band(s). Periodic reports on the progress of each individual student are made to the parents.

7th Grade Band

Seventh grade band is available to all students who have completed the sixth grade year of band instruction. Band will meet daily during the regular school day. A CONTEST BAND will be composed of all seventh grade band students who perform with the musicianship and discipline required to represent their school in a competitive situation and meet the rehearsal attendance requirements. When necessary, the director will call extra rehearsals before and after the normal school day.

 8th Grade Band

Eighth grade band is available to all students who have completed the seventh grade year of band instruction. Band will meet daily during the regular school day. A CONTEST BAND will be composed of all eighth grade band students who perform with the musicianship and discipline required to represent their school in a competitive situation and meet the rehearsal attendance requirements. When necessary, the director will call extra rehearsals before and after the normal school day.  A concert uniform is required.

Mrs. Coleman, who prefers Mrs. C., was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1967.  Mrs. C. has taught for twenty years, seventeen of them at Summit Middle School!  Mrs. C has discovered how to combine her two favorite loves, kids and music, to make a great career.  Mrs. C. has a terrific husband, Roland Coleman, and two wonderful children Raquel Elizabeth 9, and Royce Michael 5.  They attend Clegern Elementary School here in Edmond but look forward to being future Summit Eagles someday.  All live here in Edmond and love supporting the exceptional teaching staffs of the various Edmond Public Schools.

Communication is the key to a successful career in band.  Because Mrs. C. teaches at Santa Fe High School first hour she maintains an open door policy that encourages all parents to have access to her at school and at home.  Success follows instantaneously with support from the parents and students.  The band staff are here to meet your musical needs.  Please join us for a wonderful trip as we explore the world of music together.
