Class Description:  Students will learn basic technology skills that will be beneficial for their success in high school, college, and beyond.  We will focus on keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and database creation.  An understanding of some computer history, digital media, and research techniques will also be developed.  This is a one semester required course at the middle school level.  You can check the school web site at www.edmondschools.net/summit and link up through the electives section for more information about the class.

Evaluation: The grade for this course will be based on an evaluation of daily work and projects/tests.  Daily work accounts for 40% of the grade and projects/tests will be 60% of the grade.  We will follow the grading scale listed in the student agenda.

Attendance: To be successful in this course, students need to arrive to class on time.  They will be considered tardy if they are not inside the classroom when class begins.  The third and fourth unexcused tardies will result in lunch detention for the student. The consequence of a fifth tardy will be an office referral.  When a student returns to school from an absence, he/she must make arrangements with me to make up the work.  Students will have two days to do the work for each day they are absent.

Procedures: Students are expected to follow established procedures to successfully complete their assigned work on time.  If students are not working, they may placed in the after school program (ZAP) in order to complete their assignments.   Students are expected to follow district policy when using school computers.  If they are found to be violating policy, they may lose their computer privileges.

Sources: We will be using several computer programs in this course, including Typing Time by Southwestern Publishing and Microsoft Office 2007 products including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Publisher, and MovieMaker.  The textbooks are Computer Concepts in Action by Stephen E. Haag and Keyboarding Connections by Arlene Zimmerly and Julie Jaehne.  Skillbuilding by Eide, Rieck, & Klemin, Integrated Computer Projects by Momerella and Hohenstein, and The Dream Team by Todd Toporski.   Lab Hours: Students who need to make up work or practice may come to my room from 7:15 to 7:45 Monday through Friday.  After school days may vary, so please have your student contact me to make arrangements to stay after school and make up work if needed.

Expectations:  Students should be respectful to others and strive to work in a non-disruptive manner.  If a student intentionally damages school property (computers, books, etc.), he/she may be asked to reimburse the school for replacement or repair and will be referred to an administrator for further disciplinary action. Food and drinks are not permitted in the computer room.  Students are not allowed to e-mail, instant message, download programs (including games), or go to chat rooms on the Internet.  If a student is found to be doing any of these, they may lose their computer privileges for a length of time to be determined by the teacher and/or administrator.  Should a student lose their computer privileges for disciplinary reasons, written assignments will be given as an alternative.

Technology Literacy is required to be taken one semester during middle school.
