“And the
wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use a library, the doors to
learning are always open.”
In my readings I often come
across articles pertaining to the importance of the home-school connection and
the impact it has on our children. Some
of the articles give very helpful suggestions regarding activities that parents
can do with their children to improve or support their learning. On this page of the website I would like to
share some of those articles with you and other information I believe you might
find interesting. The intention is to
update this page once a month, so be sure to check it periodically. Your feedback would be appreciated; comments
about the articles or a topic you would like to know about just let me
know. My email address is

is also linked from the homepage)
I have established a resource area in
the library for parents. You are
welcome to come and check it out.

Cooper,
Steve and Caralee Adams, “Better Homes and Gardens”, Raising A Reader,
July ’02,p.108.
To create love of reading in your
children the authors made the following suggestions:
Create a reading environment
by making it pleasurable, and avoid intense tutoring at home.
Demonstrate
the importance of reading and writing in your everyday life.
Read aloud to your
children. It is never too early to
start.
Ask your child what they
thought of the story.
For a child that is not interested in reading, keep on the look
out for the “home run” book. Often it’s tied to an interest of the child such
as a hobby, sport or animal.
Bring life to the author’s words, create voices for the
characters.
“Reading Today”, White House Conference Shines Spotlight on Libraries, Aug/Sept ’02, p.27
“Research supports the value of
school libraries in boosting student achievement.” The White House hosted a
conference to discuss the latest research on libraries and student achievement.
Keith
Curry Lance, director of the library research service for the Colorado State
Library, a speaker at the conference is quoted as saying, “Libraries are vital
for children’s achievement and developing informational needs.”
