If you haven’t heard the story of Kim Maker, a special education teacher at Northern Hills, and her husband Nathan, you’re in for something incredible. This past summer, while scuba diving off the coast of Texas, Kim and Nathan were swept away from their boat by a powerful current. They spent a grueling 38 hours stranded in open water before the Coast Guard rescued them. It was Kim’s quick thinking—using her flashlight to signal the Coast Guard—that ultimately led to their rescue. Since then, Kim and Nathan have formed a close bond with their rescuers and the Coast Guard as a whole. Today, the Coast Guard visited Northern Hills to share their part in Kim and Nathan's story and to tell students about how the Coast Guard helps others. We also celebrated the Makers' bravery at this year’s Convocation. In a powerful moment, Dr. Jernigan and Ms. Davis asked everyone in the audience to shine their phone flashlights if certain statements applied to them. Finally, Dr. Grunewald asked anyone who had used a flashlight to save their life to light up—and Mrs. Maker walked onto the stage to a single spotlight. Swipe to the last slide to see that special moment. Kim and Nathan’s story reminds us of the impact each of us can have when we shine our light. We’re so grateful to have them with us. And a huge thank you to the Coast Guard team—not only for rescuing Kim and Nathan, but for inspiring our students today. #ShineYourLight ❤️
